And I just thought I had a Buddha belly... PDF Print E-mail
It’s been quite a while since I got a newsletter out… and the reason is that in June I was diagnosed with colon cancer. Since then it has been a roller coaster between emergency surgery and recovery from that, tests and scans, beginning chemotherapy in August, and a lot of paperwork… as well as dealing with many major changes in my life as a result. So here’s the story since May of this year...

In early May I had a case of food poisoning. After a couple of days, I was beginning to feel better and recover. I had teaching and session commitments that no one else could cover, so I continued to work instead of taking more time to recover. I began experiencing difficulties: not eating much, hydrating a lot, and weight loss. But by the end of May, my body seemed to be getting back to normal.

What train are you on? PDF Print E-mail
Yes, I succumbed, and am now on Facebook. If you're on Facebook and would like to connect ("be friends" in Facebook parlance), send me a friend invite. If you're not on Facebook, it's easy to sign up, and then send an friend invite. See you there!

You know, sometimes it flows, sometimes it doesn't. Last month's The Reiki Mentor™ blog posting needed a little fine tuning, which I didn't notice until after I sent it out. If it seemed a little jumbled when you read it, it was simply a reflection of some jumbled goings on in my life at the time. So I have revised last month's blog posting. Please do me a favor, and try reading it again!
-----------
"What train are you on?"

“You are on a train, the train of your spiritual journey... and some of the people in your life are simply taking a later train.”

This was a message I received for someone during a recent session. It was in response to their thought about how they were moving ahead in their spiritual journey, and were becoming frustrated that others close to them didn't appear to be where they were, or moving ahead as quickly as they would like.

Sound familiar?

It is one of the hazards of a spiritual path that not everyone we know will join us. And even if they do, they may not be on the same train as we are... they may simply be taking a later train.

Our destination is the same... but how we get there -- and when -- are as individual as we are. Some people are on one of the Reiki System trains, some take one of the many different yoga trains, and yet others take one of the Buddhist trains... and so on and so forth with all the many other paths available to us.

All of them end up at some infinite Grand Central station... many trains, many paths, to one goal.

Some people we know are on the same train as we are. More likely though, most people we know are on a different train to the same destination.

Our human personality self can be extraordinarily impatient, unreasoning, and put out by what we interpret as a lack of support, interest, and sometimes even outright opposition.

But from the perspective of our Soul, the One Self, we are all already there... it's just that our shared human fragments are still out exploring... getting off the train at different junctures to look around and experience what life has to offer.

The cornucopia of offerings is amazing, dazzling, and often overwhelming. But what inspires us doesn't always inspire someone else. What floats our boat, may actually sink someone else's.

So, the next time you find yourself frustrated by a loved one's seemingly slow progress or lack of understanding, tell yourself that they are just on a later train.

And remember...
“You are on a train, the train of your spiritual journey... and some of the people in your life are simply taking a later train.”

Many blessings,
Margaret Ann

Reiki… or rei-ki? That is the question. PDF Print E-mail
I'd like to address some of the confusion and misunderstanding that often results when the word “rei-ki/Reiki” is used, especially when speaking.

The word "rei-ki" is translated from the Japanese kanji (characters) as "spiritual energy."

The word "Reiki" is also used when speaking about a system of natural, spiritual, or vibrational healing.

So, when we are speaking, being more precise when we use the word "rei-ki" meaning spiritual energy... and "Reiki" when we mean a system of natural or vibrational healing is called for.

If I don't clearly distinguish between the two, and the listener doesn't know the difference, particularly someone who doesn't know much about the subject, confusion can certainly result.

The listener hears the same word used in different ways, but has no context in which to understand the difference in its application… and that's assuming that difference is clear to the speaker as well!

So I'm going to attempt to clarify what "rei-ki" is (to the best of my ability and with the limitation of language) – and differentiate it from what Reiki is, meaning a system of healing, a system of spiritual empowerment, a spiritual practice, a modality, or a technique.

What is "rei-ki" when we translate it as "spiritual energy"?  Different wisdom traditions have used the following terminology to express that:

That within which we live and move and have our being
The Greater Intelligence that permeates all
Infinite Mind ~ Omniscient, Omnipresent, Omnipotent
Divine Mind
Pure Consciousness
Cosmic Consciousness
True Nature
Wisdom and Truth
…and many other names depending upon one’s beliefs

So when speaking of "rei-ki" as spiritual energy, we’re on the slippery slope of semantics as we attempt to define an infinite experience with finite language. Whatever words we may choose will be a mere shadow of the reality for ultimately there will be no words to fully express an infinite experience.

Whereas the use of the word "Reiki" as the name of a system, e.g., "the Reiki System of Natural Healing," is a bit easier to define. There are many styles of training within the Reiki system; however, almost all styles have the following in common as part of their training: (1) hands-on for self and others (systemized protocols and/or intuitive approaches), (2) attunements, (3) symbols, and (4) precepts or principles.  Additionally, many styles of Reiki System training include a 5th component:  meditation or spiritual centering practices.

Therefore, we have varying styles of training, practices and protocols we call the "Reiki system" or the "system of Reiki" -- a system that instructs and guides us in the practice of natural or spiritual healing.  And there is spiritual energy translated from Japanese kanji (characters) as "rei-ki" or "reiki." Two very different things.

Here are some suggestions for how we as practitioners of the Reiki system could be more precise in distinguishing the difference between "rei-ki" and "Reiki."

"I do Reiki" becomes "I practice the Reiki system of…."

"I added a little Reiki to your massage (or whatever other technique someone does)"  becomes "I let a flow of spiritual energy come through my hands."

This also makes it clear to the client that although spiritual energy ("rei-ki") comes through the therapist's hands, the client was not receiving a session in the Reiki System of Natural Healing.

It is a nice touch to incorporate a few Reiki system hand positions during a session primarily based on another technique or modality.  However, let's be clear that it is still not a Reiki system session.  Nor is it the same as the experience of a full Reiki system session or treatment with a practitioner dedicated to that practice.

What about terminology such as "I am being Reiki" or "I am Reiki"?

Regrettably, these statements, although they make the Reiki system sound rather wonderful, only add to misunderstanding and confusion about what the Reiki system is or does.  Are an individual the Reiki system? Is an individual being spiritual energy?

I like to say, "I practice the Reiki system of natural healing... and through that practice (to borrow from a line of the Reiki Precepts), I strive to embody the teachings in my actions and be kind to people."

And maybe, some day, the grace of the Ineffable, Limitless Light will be granted me... and infuse me with its consciousness, a consciousness without separation... and liberation will be achieved.

--> Sometime in the near future, I will continue rambling with some thoughts regarding the purpose of the system of Reiki, and how the Reiki system works.

Until then…

Many blessings,
Margaret Ann
